On Tuesday came the news of Jose Mourinho's sacking, and truth be told, it was coming for a long time. Lightning struck twice for Mourinho as he was sacked just days after losing to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool once again. But sacking Mourinho is not the only solution to United's woes this season and the club must now have a proper plan in mind to ensure that they do not repeat the same mistakes of the past.
So with Mourinho gone and with United appointing their 1999 Champions League final hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their interim manager, here are the things that Manchester United must focus on to get their falling season back on track.
1: Improve Their Defense
Sir Alex had once quoted that attack wins you matches but defense wins you titles, and United have exactly shown why defense is of utmost importance for any team that aspires to do well in the Premier League. United have already conceded as many goals as they did in the whole of last season and it's not even Christmas yet!
They are a shadow of last year and Jose Mourinho had to face the consequences because of this. Even De Gea, who is one of the best goalkeepers in the world is not performing at the level that he is associated with. They have the poorest goal difference among the top six and it is mainly due to their poor performance at the back. Solksjaer and co quickly need to sort out United's problems at the back if they wish to at least finish in the top 4.
2: Get the Best Out of Paul Pogba
Since signing for United in 2016 in a record-breaking transfer fee of about 105 million Euros, it can be rightly said that Paul Pogba has not yet lived up to the expectations. Much was expected from the France international since arriving from Turin but he is yet to hit the top mark for United.
On the other hand, Pogba has been world class for France and has helped the Les Bleus win the World Cup in Russia. One reason for this duality might be poor man management by Jose, with reports suggesting that both Mourinho and Pogba had fallen out with each other. Whatever the reason might be, United need their main man to step up and help them in the second half of the season.
3: Play the United Brand of Football
Since Sir Alex's retirement in 2013, United have seen 3 different managerial regimes in a span of just about 5 years and none of them have lived up to the expectations of the fans and the club. The brand of football associated with United was not at all present under these managers and instead, we were treated with a dull type of gameplay which frustrated many fans.
United have a lot of quality in their squad but Mourinho and his predecessors failed to bring the best out of them. The likes of Sanchez and Lukaku are a shadow of what they were in Arsenal and Everton respectively and part of this reason is mainly due to United's defensive-minded approach towards the game. Maybe Solskjaer is the man to bring that gameplay back to Old Trafford and he might be the 'super sub' for Mourinho.
