Last week Roberto Mancini took over the reigns at the helm of Machester city from his predecessor Mark Hughes. Let us now analyze what is the current situation of Manchester City and what the Italian tactician brings to the side
In this season of EPL Manchester city, currently 6th in the league, have found the back of the net 33 times ( 20 home and 13 away) in 17 games which is better than Aston Villa who have scored just 29 goals (17 home and 12 away) in 18 games and are currently sitting at the 4th position. Even their city rivals Manchester United have only managed 4 goals more (19 home and 18 away) in 18 games and are occupying the 2nd position. Clearly, Mark Hughes had no problems here, and why should he, with the likes of Robinho, Tevez, Wright Phillips, Santa Cruz , Bellamy and Adebayor at his disposal.
The problem lies in the Goal Difference column. Manchester city have a goal difference of +6 ( +7 home and -1 away) which is far below Aston Villa (+15) and Manchester United (+20). As a result Manchester city have drawn most of their games (44.4%) and lead the chart in this column. Apart from their 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Spurs last weekend they had lost just 1 match and that too to Manchester United in a controversial extended injury time. If they had drawn that there record prior to the Spurs match would have been 16 Played 8 Wins 8 Drawn 0 Lost!!
With Mancini as the manager one thing that is most likely to improve is their Goal Difference column. They may not score many goals but certainly will not concede a lot. If we take a look at Mancini’s record at previous clubs, Inter (2004-05 to 2007-08) and Lazio (2002-03) this deduction will become more obvious. In 2006-07 Inter won the Serie A with a goal difference of +46 which was highest in that year and the second best was Roma with +40. In 2007-08 the record got better, Inter won the league with a goal difference of +43 while their nearest rivals Roma and Juventus fell behind by 8, each had a goal difference of +35. In his one year stint at Lazio in 2002-03 he helped the side improve from a goal difference of +13 in 2001-02 (much below the leaders Juventus with+41 and Roma with +34) to +25 in 2002-03 ( quite close to the leaders Juventus +35, Inter +26 and equal to Milan +25).
In my opinion the owners Manchester City have taken a correct decision by getting Roberto Mancini and things may change in a month or two. If this happens Premier will get more interesting!
