What would happen to Arsenal without Van Persie?

Although Arsenal striker Robin van Persie wouldn’t be capable of winning a football game on his own on the pitch against eleven opposition players, there’s no doubting that the Dutchman is the most important cog in a team that revolves firmly around both his fitness and form.

As much as Arsenal fans are loathe to admit it, Van Persie has managed to turn what is essentially a very average Arsenal side into one that is somehow still in contention to earn a spot in the Champions League ahead of next season, with the Gunners knowing all too well that they cannot risk a situation in which they fail to qualify for a competition that marks the difference in England between the elite and the rest. Those who bet on football will know this.

If Van Persie obeys previous form of seasons past, then there is no doubt that he will soon find himself injured and on the sub’s bench for a considerable spell of time, leaving Arsenal without their star player and without much hope of qualifying for the Champions League to boot. Not only this, but failure to qualify for the Champions League would also no doubt lead to Arsenal having to sell their prize asset (something Arsenal fans have become far too familiar with in recent years), leaving the North London club in even more turmoil after a year to forget so far.

That said, there is always a slim chance that the likes of Marouane Chamakh, Andrey Arshavin and Tomas Rosicky might step up and start playing the kind of football that initially persuaded Wenger to bring them to the club in the first place. Sadly for Arsenal fans, however, the chances of this happening seem about as likely as Steve Kean being handed the unequivocal support of the Blackburn fans!
