What's really lacking for Chelsea now?

Robin G
Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich

After the Champions League triumph, Roman Abramovich has splashed out money to build a young talented Chelsea to move forward. Chelsea started the current season with a powerful squad combined with youth talents and experienced players which had a huge positive surge in first few games of the season. The take off was brilliant, but what really really happened after the Manchester United game at Stamford Bridge? A string of poor results followed in November which cost them the top spot in the league table. This is similar to the 2010-11 season when Chelsea were defeated by Sunderland at Stamford Bridge and then went through a string of poor results to slip down from top spot of the league table. Why this always happens to Chelsea? The only reason behind this bad luck for such a big club is periodic change in management. After Russian business magnet Roman Abramovich bought the club, he changed the manager 9 times! When Sir Alex Fergusen and Arsene Wenger have enjoyed long spells at Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, several managers battled for survival and were eventually sacked by the trigger-happy owner which is simply pathetic.

Each manager has his own philosophy and tactics. When a manager is appointed, the players have to change their gameplay according to the view of the manager which may be entirely different from the one preceding him. It takes time to adapt the changing styles of different managers. Since Abramovich wants immediate results, no manager is allowed to make his mark in building the West London outfit. The current manager Rafael Benitez is also employed on a temporary basis until the end of the current season. Since Abramovich is the admirer of tiki-taka and the philosophy of Pep Guardiola, he is the possible option for Chelsea next season. But Guardiola has a clear vision on football which will take time to implement. So the question remains, whether Guardiola would agree to join the Stamford Bridge club to become another victim of the trigger-happy owner Roman Abramovich. Even in this struggling situation of constantly changing management, Chelsea secured their first Champions League, which left no doubt in anyone’s mind about the quality and ambition of the team. If Abramovich changes his attitude and appoints a good manager on a permanent basis, we will see more from this team for sure.
