After the 2-1 victory against Swansea City yesterday, Sir Alex confirmed that Wayne Rooney wants to leave Old Trafford in summer. When asked to confirm if Rooney had submitted a transfer request, Sir Alex said: “Yes, he’s asked, yeah.”
What could be the possible reasons that made Wayne Rooney think of leaving the club the second time in less than three years?
Yes, he has been benched for some of the games this season which include some big games like the second leg against Real Madrid which has made him unhappy. But the truth is that Rooney hasn’t been up to the mark this season. When he arrived at the start of the season, he was completely unfit and was even dropped from the squad due to lack of fitness. Rooney has been played out of position in the midfield, but so have been other players, according to team’s needs. We all have seen Phil Jones play all over the place and rarely at CB while Welbeck has never played in a proper striker’s role.
The 27-year-old Manchester United forward who has two years remaining on a United contract worth £200,000-a-week, has recently been linked with a shock move to Chelsea, while Bayern Munich and the French giants Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be interested. Chelsea’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich has had a history of such signings and he could tempt United to a deal for Rooney and if he is sold, they can use the cash raised to launch a bid for a future signing. Wayne Rooney was also linked to a possible move to Arsenal, despite his wage demands appearing to prise Arsenal out of the equation.
However, Manchester United might not want Wayne Rooney to join any of their premier league rivals who could challenge them in the next season, and that increases Rooney’s chances of moving abroad with Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich. Despite having an average season, Rooney has still managed to score 16 goals this season and he also has 13 assists to his name. The main issue with the Rooney is not his lack of talent, but the fact that he hasn’t appeared to be 100 percent fit this whole season. With Ferguson still claiming that the club isn’t letting him go anywhere, Rooney’s future still lies in doubt and time would only tell whether he stays at Old Trafford or not.
