Ashley Cole is set to stay in the Premier League after PSG chief Leonardo told Le Parisien when asked about the left back,”Neither this winter nor next season.”
Cole is reportedly set to leave Chelsea at the end of the season for free after failing to agree on a new deal. Chelsea offered him a one-year deal where as the ex-Arsenal man wanted a two-year deal. Incidentally this was the same reason why Didier Drogba couldn’t agree on a new deal and left the Londoners for pastures new.
Carlo Ancelotti fuelled the rumours when he said that Ashley Cole was the best left-back in the world. He also added that rumours linking his club with top players around the world were normal. Cole to PSG seemed a match made in heaven, for he would have got a big pay package, Champions League football and also a chance to work with a familiar face. But the recent comments from Leonardo have cooled the rumours although one can never rule out anything in football.
Both the Manchester clubs are also said to be interested in Cole after reports emerged that his contract talks with Chelsea broke down. Both the clubs don’t exactly have solid left-backs in Gael Clichy and Patrice Evra and the latter especially has not been in good touch for quite some time now. Getting a player of Cole’s quality for free from a direct title rival will be a major coup for any club, so the interest shouldn’t be of much surprise.
There was also talk of Cole re-joining his old boss Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid on a three-year deal. Now with Marcelo injured for the next 3 months and Ryan Bertrand improving rapidly, we might even see Cole at the Bernabeu in January. This move away from England might appear more attractive to Cole after his recent tweet rant against the FA. If Ashley Cole leaves, John Terry and Frank Lampard will be the last remaining members of Chelsea’s golden generation who won the league title after 50 years.
