Barcelona won their 24th La Liga title with a 3-0 win over Granada at Los Carmenes. Despite Real Madrid defeating Deportivo la Coruna 2-0, the Blaugrana reaped the rewards of an on fire Luis Suarez to win away at Granada, thus ending the Spanish league season with 91 points, with Los Blancos finishing a point behind on 90.
Assisted by some wonderful play from his teammates, Suarez scored in the 22nd, 38th, and 86th minute, to score another hat-trick this season, thus winning the race against Cristiano Ronaldo for the Pichichi, ending the season with 40 goals, the first winner other that Messi or Ronaldo since 2009.
As the referee blew the final whistle, it started scenes of wild celebrations:
Here’s how the footballing world reacted to Barcelona winning their 6th La Liga title in the last 8 seasons.
Barcelona manager Luis Enrique:
“We're a generation who have proven that we want to win titles and that we're hungry for more. It is a deserved title. The team has shown they can overcome difficult moments. Now, we celebrate and then focus on trying to win another title. I am really happy.”
When quizzed about the bad state of the pitch, Enrique brushed it aside, saying “We can't control that. It had some benefits too, like the second goal. These dry pitches were good for us this season.”
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu:
“We have a great team. 6 league titles in 8 years shows the idea and the philosophy of Barça. We deserve this league title. The players showed that they wanted it.”
Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta:
“We had to work hard all season, this feels really good. The league is the tournament that rewards the consistency. The fans deserve a big celebration, they suffer a lot. We have suffered until the end but it is glorious, to win six league titles in eight years with the same style. The Spanish Cup and the Champions League are big trophies, but winning La Liga is what really matters.”
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique:
“We're part of a historic moment. We've won 6 of the last 8 LaLiga titles. This has never been done before. We've had to win this Liga twice. We had won it and then it seemed like it slipped away. We had a bad run and previously Barça wouldn't have won this Liga, but this is a team with a winning mentality.”
When asked about celebrations hindering preparations for the Copa del Rey final, Pique replied “There's a lot of time until next Sunday. I for sure will give everything.”
