Manchester United suffered their third consecutive defeat of the week against Watford as Mourinho’s side succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. They didn;t look themselves against the Hornets in the first half and the home side could have scored more than the solitary goal they managed through Etienne Capoue who is in red-hot form at the moment.
The Red Devils started the second much brighter and go their equaliser in the second half through Marcus Rashford, how got his first start in the Premier League. It looked for a while that Jose;s side would get the winner but substitute Zuniga changed the course of the match after he scored within 53 seconds of coming on.
Troy Deeney rounded up the shock victory with a well-taken penalty right at the end after Marouane Fellaini gave away a penalty. Here’s what everyone said about the match after the result.
Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho was not a happy man after the game. The Portuguese spoke about the mistakes in the game and not just from his players.
“I reflect on three factors from the match, but only one of them I can improve. The first factor depends on ourselves, it relates to our individual mistakes and collective mistakes as individual players and as a team. We have to improve something, it is in our hands.”
"The second factor is the referee and I can’t control their mistakes, The story of the game is the result and not the ridiculous situation of the first goal. The third factor is luck, we didn’t have it. We were the best team when we lost. Heurelho Gomes made a phenomenal save from a Zlatan Ibrahimovic header.”
“We started the season very well and had good results. I feel the first moment we had a defeat, a difficult situation, some of the boys are having a bit of difficulty coping with the negativity. You see Ashley Young, his mentality the happiness and confidence he brought to the game is something more players need to have.”
The comments are very surprising considering Watford held their own against the Red Devils for most of the game.
Walter Mazzari
Jose’s opposite number on the other hand, was over the moon after the win. After losses against Arsenal and Chelsea at home, he finally has a big scalp to his name this season.
Speaking on the club’s official website he said, “I'm happy for the club, fans, players, everyone. We've been improving lots the last few weeks.”
Troy Deeney
Deeney who put the final nail in United’s coffin today believed the result was well deserved for the hard work they have been puttin in the last few weeks. “It is nice for us to get back-to-back wins. We have had the toughest start of any club. To come out with seven points is massive for a club like us.”
"I am not surprised by how we played. We should take a bit more credit, we pressed well, condensed the space and were tough in the tackle. We need to be against teams like Manchester United who have high-quality players and spend a lot of money.
"We have some really good quality players and men in there, which is the hardest part, I thought we were the better side and had a lot of chances, even when they scored we showed what we are made of and came again
Paul Scholes
United legend Paul Scholes had very harsh words for his team. The former English midfielder believed the team were all over the place against the hornets. Speaking to BT Sport he said, “The quality on the ball was as poor as you will see from a Manchester United team. That’s just the way it is at the minute. You’re not sure what you’re going to get.”
“Rashford is the only shining light. In possession, United were really, really poor.”
