David Moyes has frequently insisted that a strong midfielder with aerial ability is all Manchester United needed in the summer. Despite the signing of such a player in Marouane Fellaini, Manchester United stand ninth in the Premier League table. Why? Well, Michael Carrick, despite his midfield creativity and top class passing, lacks speed.
Lets face it, he is also pretty useless in attack. He is an extremely good passer of the ball, but when it comes to the shot, Carrick is more useless than the defenders.
Except that goal against Galatasaray, I have hardly ever seen Carrick with even a shot at goal. True, Carrick by origin, is a central defending midfielder, but he is played in a CM role (which is slightly ahead) and he should be at least moderately decent in the attack.
Cleverley plays at the level of what a bottom half team midfielder would play like. Oliveira Anderson is no better. This is where Arturo Vidal comes in:
Market wise; He is a player much better than Ander Herrera, if not Cesc Fabregas. He is priced in the region of 35 Million Euros, the same as Ander Herrera (due to Herrera’s release clause). Unlike Fabregas, he is not insistent on staying at his club in Juventus and has also stated that he is open to a move.
Skill and Ability Wise: The versatile Chilean midfielder plays mainly in the box to box midfielder role, and is capable of assisting his teammates both in defense and in attack. Vidal is a multipurpose player with the ability to create plays in the midfield with excellent crosses, amazing foot skills,an almost perfect tackling ability and also, an eye for goal. Many would say the likes of Daniele De Rossi or Yaya Toure are better than him and this is definitely not true. Yes, Yaya Toure has strength greater to Vidal, but still Vidal’s defensive and attacking abilities are superior to Toure’s. De Rossi is excellent in defense, better than Vidal, but Vidal’s attacking abilities are much superior to Rossi’s, and is an equally skilled midfielder as Yaya Toure and De Rossi. The big plus for Vidal is his above average pace, which is the main reason why it is advisable to buy him over these two. (Although the likelihood of Manchester City selling one of their main player to their main rivals is quite less). The signing of Arturo Vidal gives a big boost to United’s midfield and his signing, plus a defender for eg. Hummels or Subotic. Man Utd would again become major competitors in European football, and would have a much better chance of winning the Premier League, and the two domestic knockout cups; The League and FA CUP.
David Moyes also frequently said that the signing of Fellaini would be enough, but seeing Man Utd’s position in the League,, that was one of the worst statements from a manager on transfers. So it is likely that Fellaini is going to be replaced by Vidal, and Carrick will replace Fellaini as the holding midfielder, which Carrick plays quite well in. As mentioned above, Carrick and attack do not go well with each other. And Vidal is extremely comfortable in the role of Carrick, and as earlier mentioned has speed, which will be a threat in attack.
However, all of this is up to the manager and how he sees this situation.
