You could be forgiven for wondering if Jose Mourinho will ever be content with the squad he has at his disposal. Throughout last season, his first campaign back at Stamford Bridge, he insisted that his side were a work in progress and the sale of Juan Mata to Manchester United hinted at his desire to stamp his authority on the playing staff.
Now that he has recruited Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Frank Lampard’s time in West London has come to an end and a further summer clear out is expected once the World Cup ends, Mourinho has truly begun to formulate a squad very much of his own making. However, he doesn’t seem to be finished just yet.
Such is Chelsea’s bottomless resource pool, they are linked with an abundance of players from all over the world at any one stage and each week they seem to be targeting another player. Reports on Saturday hinted that they Chelsea are finally set to open negotiations with Paris Saint Germain’s Ezequiel Lavezzi. Chelsea have been long-term admirers but do they really need him or are they getting to a stage of just buying for the sake of it?
Should reports be true, and Chelsea seal an £18 million move for Lavezzi, then where would he fit in and would he be worth it?
