With the transfer window open, a number of top players have been linked with Liverpool as they continue their search for the “marquee” signing of the season that is rumoured to be an attacking midfielder.
Of them all, the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, has been talked about the most. But with Borussia Dortmund set to acquire his signature, it looks as if Liverpool should start looking at other alternatives soon.
With a host of names linked by various sources, one of the names that stand out is Marek Hamsik of Napoli. Although he has said he is currently happy with his contract at Napoli, a fine bid could lure him away to Anfield. Should he join, it would be a huge boost for Liverpool. Let us have a look at how things would change.
Tactics watch
Looking at the tactics, he could be deployed as a central attacking midfielder in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 formation. What he adds to the team is faster attack play with his creative passing and dribbling coupled with pace. It would also improve Liverpool’s counter attacks which have been highly dismal the previous season.
Liverpool’s attack has been relatively slower compared to many teams with the adoption of the passing game under Brendan Rodgers. Though the January signing, Philippe Coutinho, has added a lot of creativity, a lot still needs to be done if Liverpool are to aim for a top 4 finish or higher.
Improvement in Gerrard’s performance
Signing Hamsik would mean the club legend Steven Gerrard getting more rest. Though he would be ready to play it out for Liverpool every minute of every game, it is important for him to be rested as he is 33 now.
If Gerrard gets more rest, it would mean he can give his all for Liverpool when he plays as he need not worry about his stamina wearing out. Also, with the recovery of his shoulder still going on, it would be better for him not to sweat it out as much as he would hope to, if he wants to keep himself going.
The last missing piece?
Liverpool are currently looking stable in all other departments except midfield and in particular attacking midfield, with only 2-3 realistic choices for big games. Hamsik could well prove to be the last missing piece for Liverpool and who knows, he could be the deciding factor for Liverpool’s position at the end of the season, should he sign.
Everything depends on how interested Liverpool are and also how tempted he would be if Liverpool bids for him. Liverpool could get his services for 15 -20m euros, which could be a very good bargain for a player of his class. All remains to be seen as the transfer window brings in more surprises daily.
