Why the next season will be crucial for Wayne Rooney

Two seasons ago, Wayne Rooney shocked Manchester United by handing in a transfer request.

His reasons were United ‘lacked” ambition, which was evident from their dormancy in the transfer window.

But he was convinced and made aware of his mistake by Sir Alex Ferguson and Rooney himself admitted he was wrong in handing in the request.

Fast forward to six months and Rooney scored the goal which helped United clinch a record 19th title and also was United’s best player in Wembley as they were beaten by the best team on the planet.

Rooney was man enough to admit his mistake and won back the trust of the United faithful with THAT goal against city.

The next season was a completely different story with Wazza scoring at will. He was at his irrepressible self, scoring hat-tricks against Arsenal and Bolton.

But it all did not work out in his favor as United were eliminated from all the cup competitions and his record tally of 34 goals in a season weren’t enough for United to secure the Premiership crown.

For all his incredible talent and industrious nature, Rooney hasn’t done a CR7.

The season of 2007/08 belonged to Ronaldo as he scored 42 goals and single handedly won United the double. Single-handedly!

That’s what United fans expect from Wazza. To single-handedly win them the Premier League and maybe the Champions League too.

He’s 26 now and reaching his prime both in terms of football and attitude. He will most probably captain England at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and he could also be United’s next captain.

The best player in England for the past 5-6 years, Rooney is the only player who could probably be mentioned in the same bracket as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

But for that comparison to be enhanced, Rooney has to win titles. More importantly, he has to win them on his own.

Only then will the player be considered a legend and the tag of ‘white Pele’ be truly justified.

And with Rooney, you can expect that to happen.

So the next 2-3 seasons will hopefully be a ‘Wazza show’ and he’s sure to dominate the league for years to come.
