Will Angel Di Maria be the perfect answer to Manchester United’s wing problems?
The 25-year-old has scored twice in 12 appearances and is looking to weigh up his options as he ponders over his squad selection for the Argentine national team for the next year’s World Cup in Brazil. But he could just be the missing piece in the jigsaw United need going into the second half of the season.
According to Squawka Stats, the current Real Madrid star has an average pass length of 19m albeit his wonderful vision, with 79% accuracy. He does give the ball away at times but when on full song, he is surely one of those who can charm you week in and week out. Di Maria’s passing accuracy however is way low at just 57%, which has much room for improvement. One of his biggest points is: he is hardly lazy and does track back to help out his defence when needed. He also makes quite a few interceptions but is often guilty of trying too much on his own thus gifting the ball away to the opposition.
Coming to his strengths, the Argentine has a fabulous left foot, worthy of being compared amongst the best in the world. Moreover he is very calm in possession, possesses the swagger needed to throttle his team during testing times and overall has a wonderful knack of picking the right moments at the right time.
The current scenario at United has quite changed from the gloomy affair at the beginning of the season. The narrow win against Arsenal is expected to spur them on as far as their title aspirations are concerned. Coming to their wingers, neither Nani nor Valencia or Ashley Young have displayed any flashes of brilliance to be optimistic about. Moreover United have always had good wingers who can utilise their width of the pitch much to their strengths.
Coming to Di Maria’s style of play he loves long balls which might well feed into Rooney or Robin van Persie up front, plays the ball on the ground too often, a quality which will help United’s playing style. Moreover he loves to perform layoffs often adding to his armoury, cuts inside making delightful darts in with quick pace and above all shoots accurately from distance. All in all if United do prepare to sign the Argentine they might have to squash out a few extra pounds from their wallet, but it will be worth the gamble.
