Another day, another defeat. Manchester United have now lost three games in a row for the first time since 2001, and even that was at the end of a campaign in which the club was attempting to cope with the news that Sir Alex Ferguson might be on the verge of retiring. This time around, the legendary manager has actually gone and his successor is struggling to to cope in the aftermath of the most successful period in United’s history. While David Moyes is unquestionably not solely to blame for the situation, there are areas in which a different approach might yield short-term results.
For one thing, it is high time Wilfried Zaha was given a run in the team. The young winger has hardly featured for the champions since joining from Crystal Palace and one has to wonder why. Given the scurrilous rumours that circulated involving Zaha and the manager’s daughter, one has to wonder exactly who the player needs to sleep with to get a game at the moment. It is not as though the wingers playing on a regular basis have made themselves undroppable through impeccable performances. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. If Zaha can’t force his way into the team now then when can he?
Zaha has made just two appearances in the league despite impressing on his debut for the club in the Community Shield. Rumour has it Moyes is eager to loan the player out during this transfer window, and yet such a move would seem foolish to say the very least. Fortune favours the brave as proven by the Adnan Januzaj’s performances this term. He has assumed responsibility and emerged as one of very few bright sparks in a largely underwhelming few months at Old Trafford. Young players can thrive if they feel they are valued by their manager and perhaps it’s high time Moyes took a risk. Lord know it’s worth trying something different given the way things are going.
Ashley Young is not at the level required of a United player while Antonio Valencia and Nani continue to struggle with form, fitness or a combination of the two. The team have been dull and predictable all season, more often than not attacking from the flanks but without the players capable of doing any real damage. Lady luck has not been kind to Moyes but injuries and poor decisions tell only a fraction of the story. The manager has been too conservative and the time is right for a change of approach. Why not start by giving Zaha the opportunity to prove himself?
