Will Lampard be successful at Chelsea once again?

Frank Lampard is on the verge of a shocking move back to Chelsea and let's just say he won't exactly be in the central midfield position because instead, Lampard is looking likely to be trading a Chelsea kit with the number eight on the back to a tie and a smart suit jacket.

This comes after just the one year of managerial experience in which he took Derby County to the playoff finals and finished runners up, therefore failing to gain promotion. So, if Chelsea do land Lampard as many reports suggest, the main question will be - Will Lampard be successful at Chelsea in the managerial role if hired?

Well, to answer that question, on one hand you could argue that yes, in what world is Frank Lampard not successful with Chelsea in any capacity? Because after all, Lampard knows more about Chelsea than potentially any other manager in Europe. Yet, on the other hand it could also be argued that Lampard lacks the managerial experience in order to guide a team as big as Chelsea towards success.

To begin with, let's start with the hand that suggests Frank Lampard's reign at Stamford Bridge will be a successful one if he is given the job. The reasoning behind this statement is that Frank Lampard knows Chelsea like the back of his hand and he is considered one of the greatest players to play for the club. This alone will earn him respect in the Chelsea dressing room which is something former manager Maurizio Sarri never got, hence why he is no longer in charge.

In addition to this, the fact that Chelsea have a current transfer ban means that they are being forced to turn to many youth players who were previously on loan to perform and take their chances. These are players like Mason Mount and Tomori Fikayo who did in fact shine and stand out under Frank Lampard for Derby last season coincidentally.

This means that if Lampard does become the next manager of Chelsea he will already have players at his disposal that he has worked with well before. Furthermore, Lampard also showed that he doesn't need a big budget for success when he took Derby to the playoff final last season so a transfer ban shouldn't be an issue for him.

Moving to the other hand, the one that argues that Frank Lampard would be the wrong man for Chelsea if given the job. The main reasoning behind this point is that Frank Lampard only has one year of managerial experience in which he managed Derby County who are in the Championship. This means that Lampard also completely lacks any Premier League managerial experience which isn't ideal considering the expectations for any Chelsea manager which is usually to at least finish among the top 4.

Moreover, it was clearly shown by Manchester united last season that the nostalgic feeling of a legend back at the club in charge does not last very long. This was after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started brilliantly, knocking Paris Saint Gemain out of the Champions League, but then going winless in the final six games which included a draw against relegated side Huddersfield and a 2-0 loss to another relegated side, Cardiff. So with Ole failing to impress at United, is it wise for Chelsea to follow suit and hire a premier League and Chelsea legend despite the lack of managerial experience?

To conclude, although Frank Lampard looks odds on to make a return to Chelsea as a manager, could it be a mistake by Chelsea to hire him at this stage of his managerial career.
