There are rumours that Barcelona will sign Chelsea defender David Luiz before the commencement of the 2013-14 season of the La Liga.
Barcelona’s defensive rearguard seems vulnerable to counter attacks, and have conceded several goals from it. Their 7-0 whitewash by Bayern Munich in the semi-final of the 2012-13 Champions League is a clear example of how weak they are, defensively.
It seems that the Catalan club were oblivious to its defensive dilemma while signing Brazilian winger, Neymar. The addition of Neymar will surely bolster its attacking options, but defensively, the Blaugrana still remain weak. David Luiz is, no doubt, a good defender, but the question that will be asked is – will signing David Luiz be a panacea or just a palliative to the club’s defensive vulnerability?
Well, let us take a look at Luiz’s recent performances. A look at his outing for Brazil in the Confederations Cup should push Barcelona to sign him without further delay. He was without doubt one of the best defenders of the tournament and some of his gravity defying skills were more than impressive.
One example of his defensive capability was seen in the Confederations Cup, when he acrobatically dived to deny Pedro a goal. He has also been magnificent in his performances for Chelsea, and has the added ability to convert free-kicks and corners into goals.
David Luiz will surely be a positive signing for Barcelona and will definitely boost their defence. But will he be a permanent solution, if he is signed, to their defensive woes? Only time can tell.
