Where Was The 1994 FIFA World Cup Held?

United States, Brazil, and Morocco, all 3 bid for the hosting duties of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The vote was held in Zurich on July 4, 1988, and got over in just one round with United States receiving a little over half the votes by all members of the committee. FIFA thought letting United States host the FIFA World Cup would help increase the sports popularity.

Thus United States became the hosts of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The games were played in 9 different stadiums across 9 different cities in United States. The Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena was the most used stadium and hosted 8 different matches, including a Round od 16 game, a Semi-Final, the third place playoff and the final. The Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit on the other hand did not hold a single knockout game.

Who Was The 1994 World Cup Winner?

Brazil won the 1994 FIFA World Cup tournament. Brazil were drawn into Group B along with Sweden, Russia, and Cameroon. This Quarter-final matchup was interesting to say the least. Brazil took a 2 goal lead over Netherlands, but goals by Bergkamp and Winter saw Netherlands make a comeback in the game.

An 81’ goal by Branco however saw Brazil take a 3-2 lead late into the game. This goal served as the winner and Brazil advanced to the Semi-finals stage. Brazil played Sweden in the Semi-final and once again got a narrow win, winning 1-0 owing to a 80’ winner by Romario. Brazil’s final opponent in the 1994 FIFA World Cup was Italy. Italy had finished 3rd in its group and was the team with the lowest points and goal difference out of those who qualified for the knockout stages.

They had barely managed to get through to the knockout stages but were now in the finals. Brazil were unable to score against Italy even after extra time, but owing to 3 penalty misses by Italy, Brazil won 3-2 in the penalty shoutout and won the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
