The farthest any Asian team has ever gone in the World Cup was in 2002 when South Korea reached the semi-finals. Their journey was, however, cut short by Germany and the Koreans had to satisfy themselves with a third-place playoff.

Turkey played Korea for the third place and Hakan Surur gave them an early lead when he scored the fastest ever goal in the World Cup. The game saw three goals within 15 minutes, the first scored in the 11-second by Hakan, the other two in the 9th and 13th minute by Lee Eul-young and Ilhan Mansiz, respectively.

Turkey won the game 3-2 and Hakan's goal still remains the fastest goal ever scored in the World Cup.
