The Football Association came to an agreement Sunday to ask England’s top young talent to play in the under-21 tournaments in 2014, instead of partaking in the friendlies for senior players.
Part of reason for England’s defeat in the hands of Norway was because of the squad missing some key players, like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, from the equation. Other players such as Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Jack Rodwell withdrew because of senior call ups to play Ireland and Brazil.
When asked if the best of the team will be shortlisted for the 2015 finals, David Bernstein, chairman of the English FA, said: “Roy Hodgson has a proper feel for things. I think it is something we need to look at. But I can’t sit here and make a commitment, that is something for the next chairman and the FA to make those decisions.”
He added that he couldn’t have put up a better fight to lead the under-21 team to the final tournament. The England under-21 team lost to Italy and Norway in their first two matches of the European under-21 Football Championship 2013. Their last match will be against the hosts Israel, and a a loss would mean that England would become the second team ever to go home without registering a single point in the tournament.
