The 1st Inter-College Uth League '14', concluded yesterday, with the semi-finals, finals and 3rd place match at the Ambedkar stadium, New Delhi played over the course of the weekend.
The semi-finals were exciting matches with Ram Lal Anand losing to Zakir Husain (Mor) college (1-4) and Jamia Milia Islamia losing to Motilal Nehru (Eve) college (0-1), courtesy a last minute goal. The 3rd place match was won by Ram Lal Anand, who defeated the popular team, Jamia Milia 2-0.
The finals lived upto the hype of the entire league, and although there were no goals in normal time (70 minutes) and extra-time (14 minutes), the match went to a penalty shoot-out where the winners of the inaugural league presented by KickOff Solutions Pvt. Ltd, along with Real Sports Association were decided. The Zakir Husain players held their nerves in the shoot-out to emerge winners 4-3.
One of the finest players to have represented the Indian national Football team, Mr. Shabbir Ali, who has also worked with many I-League clubs, and had received the highest sports honour in the country - Major Dhyan Chand Award in 2011, was the 'Chief Guest'.
The event was also graced by Mr. Shaheen, Secretary DSA and DPE Zakir Husain College and other DSA officials. Mr. Mann, DPE-SBS and one of the chief selectors of Delhi University said, "This was an extremely well-organized tournament and the timing was right to scout for talent with the university team trials commencing next week.”
All the top 3 teams were given trophies and individual medals, with the winning team receiving a special gift from the Delhi Dynamos FC. They sent official jerseys of their marquee player (No.10) Alessandro Del Piero. Apoorva Kakkar of Zakir Husain was adjudged the Best goalkeeper, Abhishek Rawat of Motilal Nehru (Eve) the Best Defender, Nitin George of Jamia Milia Islamia the Best midfielder and Ajay Pal of Ram Lal Anand College was the highest scorer with 7 goals. The 'Fair Play' award was won by 'Shivaji College'.
