Unreal Editor for Fortnite has been one of the game's biggest assets, opening up a near-infinite number of possibilities for players to create their maps and curate unique experiences. However, while the tool is invaluable to the game, it has been largely limited to the PC platform, and new developments suggest that is not going to change anytime soon.

Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, recently clarified that there are no plans for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite to come to consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. He highlighted the power and size of the Unreal Editor and emphasized the need for a keyboard and mouse for the tool, stating:

"This isn’t coming and never has been in the works. Unreal Editor is a big piece PC software that requires a mouse and keyboard"

Why the Unreal Editor for Fortnite will likely never come to consoles

The confirmation from Sweeney is heartbreaking news for console players as they won't be able to create and share their own experiences. His statement, while disheartening, does have genuine reasons for being as it is. The Unreal Editor for Fortnite is a massive program that regularly features updates and changes to improve its capabilities.

Sweeney's statement primarily focuses on the size and power of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, which makes sense given that it is a game designing software with various textures and elements. He specifically called it a "big peace PC software," highlighting how it takes a lot of computing power to make the Unreal Editor function as it does.

Another point of note is the use of mouse and keyboard. Since the Unreal Editor for Fortnite largely deals with designing and arranging every inch of a map, it requires a lot of precision and button inputs to make it work. This is something that would immediately be limited by the controller inputs on consoles, given their limited number of buttons and accessibility.

While this can be worked around in certain ways such as the use of mouse and keyboard on PlayStation 5, it does not seem like it's enough for Epic Games to budge. As the game continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how the absence of one of its flagship features on consoles impacts the game moving forward, if at all, especially since it has been confirmed that Fortnite Battle Royale will be designed using UEFN starting in 2025.
