Epic Games offers a wide range of cosmetics in Fortnite, and players shell out a massive amount of money to buy and show them off. Even the Battle Pass skins are hidden behind a paywall, and one has to purchase the premium version to unlock all the skins.
Although outfits are the primary cosmetic items, without influencing the gameplay a lot, free-to-play players are always chasing popular skins. Some of these are so rare that they actually sell for hundreds of dollars. Naturally, many players wonder if they can get free skins in Fortnite.
Fortunately, there are several ways to get skins in the battle royale game without paying. Even free-to-play players can obtain skins and stop playing as boring default characters. While free outfits might not be as rare as paid ones, they do make the game much more interesting.

How to get free skins in Fortnite
Not all players can afford the expensive skins that are available in the Item Shop or the Battle Pass. The 950 V-Bucks' pass or Item Shop skins ranging from 800 to 2,000 V-Bucks are hardly the purchases most people want to make. This is the major reason why they wish Epic Games offered a free skin every once in a while, apart from special occasions.
Holiday events always come with a free skin as a reward for players. Fortnitemares and Winterfest events almost always have a no-cost outfit that they can redeem. While the Halloween special variant requires them to complete certain challenges, the Winterfest reward requires little effort and is literally a gift.
In fact, Winterfest 2021 offered two free skins, and players can expect something similar from the upcoming Christmas event.
Besides holiday events, Epic Games also offers free skins as promotional offers or collaborations. These require players to complete a set of challenges, and once complete, they can redeem their no-cost reward.
Players can also get the Fortnite Battle Pass for free
Another way to get free skins in Epic's title is through the Battle Pass. Although it is technically paid and requires 950 V-Bucks to purchase, players can also get it for free.
Every season, the pass offers 300 V-Bucks entirely for free. This means that after four complete iterations, players will have accumulated 1,200 V-Bucks, enabling them to purchase the premium version.
Although buying the premium version still requires players to spend in-game currency on the skins, every pass offers 1,500 V-Bucks in return. Therefore, they will not have to spend a single cent on buying the Battle Pass. Moreover, they will also end up accumulating some extra V-Bucks to buy cosmetics from the Item Shop as well.
Clearly, it is possible to get free skins in Fortnite. Those who have been playing the game for a long time might have multiple free cosmetics by now. Even if they are common, Epic Games makes sure that they are well-designed so as to not disappoint the free-to-play gamers.
