Fortnite leaks suggest AI pets in development

According to the latest Fortnite leaks, it seems that Epic Games is working on having pets added to the game. Dubbed "AI pets," it seems that they will follow players around during the match. While pets are a part of Fortnite already, they are limited to Back Blings. Some are reactive as well and are rather amusing to look at.

The only other 'pets' that are in-game are wildlife that can be tamed, but they do not fit the description accurately. As such, AI pets will be a brand new mechanic that will be introduced to the game. The information was brought to light by Fortnite leaker/data-miner ImPeQu. On that note, while the notion of having a pet follow you around is exciting, there's more to it as well.

Fortnite leaks hint at AI pets being rideable

Having a pet as a Back Bling is cool, and having it follow you around is probably the cutest mechanic that Epic Games has ever made. However, it would seem that players will also be able to ride their AI pets in-game. This will function similarly to taming and riding wildlife into battle or to move around the map.

Based on logical deduction, one would assume that AI pets are going to be part of "Arnold '', Fortnite's upcoming open-world mode, right? Well, it seems that these AI pets will be available in all playlists (modes). This would suggest that these could be brand-new cosmetics/mechanics in-game.

It is largely unclear how this would work, but it can be assumed that players will be able to perhaps deploy their AI pets during a match. They could then be used to cover ground or perhaps rush into battle.

Since cosmetic items are a huge deal in Fortnite, AI pets could even have their own skins. It would be only logical. With Epic Games creating their own Item Shop for Save The World, skins for AI pets are not too outlandish to consider.

When could AI pets be added to Fortnite?

While Fortnite leaks do provide some basic insight, there is no release date mentioned anywhere. Since these things are dynamic, development will require a fair amount of time.

Given that AI pets seem to be a major mechanic, Epic Games will not likely only introduce it sometime during Fortnite Chapter 6. Nonetheless, more information about the same can be expected to surface over the next few months.
