Epic Games has introduced major changes to the Fortnite text chat experience, and these will not be limited just to the main menu. The official blog, published on the Fortnite website on December 9, 2024, announced the availability of texting while in-game. Not only can you speak with your party in a Party Channel or your friends in a Direct Message Channel but you can also speak with other players in the lobby using the Public Game Channel — when both sides have the feature enabled.
Though this sounds like a great feature, a lot of players in the community are concerned that the Fortnite texting feature could potentially increase toxicity in the game. Popular gaming news provider @ShiinaBR shared a screenshot of the new Fortnite text chat experience on X which went viral with over 19,000 likes and hundreds of comments from the community within a few hours.

Popular content creator @D3NNI_yt reposted the abovementioned post with the following caption:
"Oh my god this is about to be so toxic"
Many players seem to agree with his comment. User @littlepeachkels said that many players could be banned, while @SlavAncient thought that it would not be as bad as Call of Duty Warzone proximity chat.
User @Axe_Spooner suggested not using it, while @aryan15309 hoped there would be a way to disable or remove the new Fortnite text chat experience. This has been discussed in detail in a later section.
Is Epic Games taking precautions to make the Fortnite text chat experience good?
The official blog by Epic Games states that, when active, the mature language filter will automatically remove various kinds of mature language and toxicity. The personal information filter censors certain types of information such as email addresses and credit card numbers in real-time.
Players above the age of 13 would have the option to remove the text filters, allowing them to see chats containing mature language. However, players under the age of 13 would not be able to remove these under any circumstances. Similar to voice reporting, players would now also be able to report texts in both private and global channels.
The new Fortnite text chat experience will be arriving in the major content update of December 10, 2024, alongside side new FPS game mode named Ballistic.
