The much-awaited Halo outfit has come to Fortnite, but the gaming community seems to be disappointed over the fact that the promised Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style cannot be redeemed. Despite assurances from the developer regarding its availability, players have been unable to get their hands on the coveted black variant of the OG skin.

Back in 2020, Epic Games had stated that as a memento of the rich legacy of the game, it would reward this Matte Black style to console players who play a match on the Xbox Series X|S with the Master Chief outfit equipped:

With the return of the Master Chief to the Fortnite Item Shop, players got their hands on the coveted cosmetic. However, despite playing on the Xbox Series X|S consoles with the outfit enabled, many complained that they did not receive the cosmetic item:

Other players complained that they could not unlock the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style, suggesting that the feature could be glitched:

Meanwhile, other players talked about playing the game immediately after purchasing the outfit, and still not being rewarded with the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style. Some players reported the issue minutes after the outfit made its way back to the Item Shop on December 23, 2024:

On the other hand, some players seemed clearly disappointed at not receiving the promised outfit despite there not being a time limit to claim the free skin variant. Some even demanded a refund:

Many players have reported that even after playing and winning a match using the OG skin, they have not received the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style. As of this writing, Epic Games has not put out a statement regarding this issue. Players will have to wait for an update from the developers regarding the availability of the offer to get this popular variant.

Update: Epic Games has now confirmed that new players will not receive the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style.

Why is the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style popular?

The Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style has gained popularity over the years due to what it represents. The variant is Epic Games' tribute to the legacy of Halo and the Master Chief in Xbox history.

Additionally, the Master Chief is one of the most coveted skins in the game. This gaming legends series outfit has appeared in the Fortnite Item shop only 81 different times on 76 different days. With its last appearance over three years ago, it made a surprise return today. So it comes as no surprise that fans of the popular franchise want to get their hands on this cosmetic item.
