Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 has brought with it many new exciting changes, allowing players to experience the feeling of being a lone warrior in a Mad Max-type wasteland with its own faction of Wasteland Warriors being out on the hunt. However, while the additions have undoubtedly injected another level of thrill into the gameplay, the player numbers don't seem to reflect this.
This was highlighted in a recent Reddit post by u/SimonMcMac, where the player showcased player numbers across different game modes. They highlighted how unranked modes, both Build and Zero Build, have been taking a hit when it comes to player counts, while also explaining how the Ranked mode still sees a relatively stable player count in Chapter 5 Season 3.

The post became a hub for players to express their opinions about the falling player count, with u/MikeOfMichigan theorizing how this is due to Epic Games expanding out with game modes like LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and the Festival mode. They highlighted how the developers' decision to spread XP for the Battle Pass across different game modes can be a bit tedious and unfun for players.
u/BigMikeAshley pointed out how they consider themselves a casual player and they are having a tough time dealing with the chaos of cars while also revealing how they skipped out on the Chapter 5 Season 3 Battle Pass for this very reason.
u/TrentDF1, a Zero Build player, highlighted other issues with the current season, citing the Mythic Nitro Cars as well as the Nitro Fists as some of the issues that hold Chapter 5 Season 3 back. Reddit user "SnoopySuited", on the other hand, expressed how they were enjoying Chapter 5 Season 3 on launch, it has grown to become a lot more repetitive.
Further reinforcing u/MikeOfMichigan's point regarding the XP in Chapter 5 Season 3, u/MyAnxiousDog commented:
"I like to get my XP up but it's just becoming harder and harder to do so"
Why are player counts in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 going down?
As seen in the Reddit post in focus, the game is undoubtedly seeing a dip in numbers in Chapter 5 Season 3. While the concept of reduced player numbers is difficult to attribute to one specific cause, it is fair to assume that it might be due to the immense shift in the vehicle meta in the current season.
With such a drastic change, many casual players, who are having a tough time adapting, might be moving away from it. Additionally, this can also be attributed to reduced player counts at the beginning or end of every season, potentially leaving the door open for Epic Games to gear up and bring the numbers back to what they once were.
