The gaming community is seemingly outraged after Epic Games confirmed that new players will not be able to get their hands on the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style. With the return of the legendary character skin from the Halo franchise in the Item shop, many players purchased the coveted cosmetic item.
But hours after the outfit went live on the Item Shop, Epic Games posted an update on their X account, stating that new purchases of the OG Master Chief outfit will not reward players with the Matte Black Style.
Players seemed visibly offended and disappointed, as a previous post from 2020 had stated that "There is no time limit for unlocking the style". @ThisIsITalk further emphasized this point:
Master the game with our Fortnite Interactive Map v33.00 here!
Meanwhile, user @CrusadeSymphony stated that they were tired of companies changing policies instead of providing the services that were advertised:
Many players were surprised at the sudden change of terms since Epic Games had stated that the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style could be unlocked and obtained at any time in the future. Leaker and data miner @ShiinaBR chipped in with his two cents. Meanwhile, another player pointed out how the update was only given after the skin was released in the Fortnite Item Shop:
On the other hand, many players wondered how this could be done, citing examples of the Renegade Raider, which made its way back to the Item Shop despite being supposedly limited-edition. According to another user, they purchased a PlayStation 5 and were rewarded with the armored Kratos style, why the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style was any different from X-box:
While most players were outraged, some were concerned about the legality of the move. This question comes amidst Epic Games having to shell out $245 million after an FTC lawsuit. Some users even went as far as mentioning FTC-related accounts on the post:
That said, Epic Games has also stated that any purchases of the Master Chief outfit made today can be returned by players by reaching out to Player Support through their official platform. According to the developers, this can be done without spending a Return Ticket.

Why is the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style so popular?
The Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style rose to popularity due to its unique style and visual design, which added a new dimension to the OG skin. This variant was released by Epic Games as a tribute to the legacy of Halo in Xbox history.
With the chances of the Fortnite Master Chief Matte Black Style returning being slim, the skin's rarity has made it even more popular. This is in a similar vein to the Renegade Raider — one of the most coveted outfits that was deemed unobtainable till it made a surprise return to the Item Shop a few days ago.
