The cameras and much of the attention has been on the star names that have descended upon Indian shores as part of Premier Futsal, the latest in a long line of sporting leagues to hit the country. In the midst of them all have been a few Indian players who've performed admirably and carved out a space for themselves.
One such player is Jonathan Piers, the young man representing Paul Scholes’ Bengaluru 5s. Part of the U-19 team of i-league champions Bengaluru FC, Jonathan has scored in both games so far in the Chennai leg, and along with Fredsan Marshall of Goa 5s is the top Indian goalscorer at Premier Futsal. The tall and powerfully built player spoke to assembled media after their game Sunday against Ronaldinho’s Goa 5s.
Excerpts:
On playing with Paul Scholes…
It was unbelievable. Never had I ever thought that I would be playing with Paul Scholes in my life. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, it's unbelievable.
On having scored in both games and being the top Indian goalscorer…
I'm ecstatic. I came here as a defender and the coach told me why don't I play forward and it just clicked. I didn't expect it.
Whether playing in front of large crowds like this has added pressure…
Yes, it is actually my first time, but then it's part of the game and you have to stay focused.
How he's been preparing since he heard of his involvement in Premier Futsal...
Back in Bangalore, I play with my club, but that's 11 a side. So I've kept myself fit and been preparing for this everyday.
What he's looking forward to from the Goa leg…
Looking forward to bagging more points for my team and hopefully going to the next round.
