The AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D are Team Red's primary offerings in the mid-range market. They have multiple positives, including dirt-cheap AM4 motherboards and affordable DDR4 memory, to name a few. If you're coming from a Ryzen 3000 series chip, you won't have to spend an extra penny on other hardware, which makes them lucrative purchases.
The latest launch from Team Red, the 5800XT, will hit the shelves this July. This marks AM4's lifespan at seven years. This is impressive given the track record of Intel, which killed its LGA1700 socket within three and a half years of its launch. Team Blue launched this platform in late 2020.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D and the 5800XT are supposed to be closely related, with both featuring eight-core chips based on the Zen 3 architecture. However, as the name suggests, the 5800X3D has the added benefits of 3D V-cache.
Specs comparison
Specs differences between the two processors are quite scant. For the most part, you get a similar package with the two eight-core chips. However, the new 5800XT clocks 300 MHz higher than the older 3D CPU.
The biggest con of the 5800X3D is the lack of overclocking support, as AMD CPUs are renowned for their robust OC performance. AMD decided to axe this feature with their first 3D V-cache offering because of unstable clock speed responses when paired with the new technology. However, these restrictions have been removed with the 7000X3D chips and are expected to completely vanish with the upcoming 9000X3D lineup.
Below is a detailed specs comparisons of the two chips:

As the AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT is yet to launch, we don't have exact benchmark data yet. We'll have to wait for the official reviews for that. However, AMD claimed the chip to the Intel Core i5-13600K in the launch presentation and showed the CPUs are pretty close to each other across a bunch of video games. However, in Cyberpunk 2077, the 5800XT was claimed to be 12% faster than the competition.
These are impressive claims, especially given the already stellar track record of the Core i5-13600K in benchmarks. Given below is a comparison of the 5800X3D and the 13600K in synthetic tests. As is evident, the 13600K bulldozers the AMD chip out of consideration. We sourced these numbers from Nanoreview.
However, the chips paint a completely different story in video games. When paired with a more modest GPU like the RTX 3060, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D turns out to be as powerful as 13600K across the board. This is primarily because, at lower resolutions like 1080p, the games are mostly limited by the GPU. With the 5800XT, we don't expect any difference.
Here is a comparison of the CPUs side-by-side. If you're rocking a mid-range GPU like the RTX 3060, we don't believe it's worth upgrading to the Ryzen 7 5800XT. We sourced the numbers listed below from YouTuber NJ Tech.
When paired with an RTX 3080, the differences between the chips become more evident. However, the gain with either CPU is a mixed bag. In some games, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D takes the lead, while the 13600K is the better option in others. This is because the underlying silicon responds differently to games based on their optimization metrics, the game's nature, and other factors. We believe it to be a slightly different story for the Ryzen 7 5800XT as well.
Below are the exact numbers in several video games. The results are from NJ Tech.
Overall, it's difficult to tell whether the Ryzen 7 5800XT will be a worthy purchase for gamers until the embargo lifts sometime in July 2024. However, we can conclude that Ryzen 7 5800X3D owners won't have a reason to upgrade, given how close these chips are supposed to be.
For those upgrading from an older CPU, the 5800XT can be a lucrative choice. Unlike the X3D alternative, this processor will be unlocked. Moreover, it's priced competitively at $249, which is a steal compared to the 5800X3D, which is still selling for $338 at Newegg.
However, given the numerous factors that go into determining CPU performance in video games, I would wait until a final launch before calling dibs on either chip.
