The Intel "Lunar Lake" Core Ultra 200 and Ryzen AI 300 HX series were unveiled as the next generation of laptop CPUs at Computex 2024. Both chip makers have upgraded their mobile chips with extra hardware and AI-processing hardware to keep up with Microsoft's Copilot+PC plans. They are set for launch later this year.
However, which series would be better? Both Intel and AMD claim their processors are the best in the market. Let's try to find the winner of the age-old Team Red vs Blue battle in this article.
NOTE: Most of this information is still based on leaks, and we will have to wait for a formal launch to get the exact information.
What to expect from AMD "Strix Point" Ryzen AI HX 300 series laptops?
For now, only two processors have been unveiled in the "Strix Point" Ryzen AI HX 300 series lineup. These include the high-end HX 370 and HX 365, both of which pair the Ryzen AI 9 moniker.
The processors seem promising on pair. Instead of opting for a hybrid architecture, unlike some older Ryzen 7000 series chips, the higher-end 370 pairs 12 high-performance cores and 24 threads. The slightly cut-down 365 features 10 cores and 20 threads.
Both chips clock past 5 GHz on the higher end. Besides, you also get capable RDNA 3.5 graphics processors with either. The chips also accommodate an XDNA 2 NPU capable of up to 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS) for AI workloads.
Both processors have configurable TDPs wide enough to fit both low-power PCs and high-end gaming-focused systems.
Intel "Lunar Lake" Core Ultra 200V and 200H laptops might be significant competitors to AMD's Ryzen AI
Intel "Lunar Lake" is set to be the next generation of high-end laptop processor lineup. Intel didn't delve into the exact SKUs that will be offered as part of this generation, however. Whatever information we have about the upcoming offerings is primarily based on leaks.
The detailed specs list confirmed for now is as follows. This table is only about the Core Ultra 200V series, which will be low-power offerings. Intel has also set up a high-power Core Ultra 200H series to primarily power gaming laptops.
For starters, both Intel and AMD are back at it with improved CPU cores and next-generation graphics. The latest chips also pack better NPUs for AI acceleration.
Leaked benchmarks have hinted these new chips will have a significant lead over their older counterparts. However, Intel's "Lunar Lake" Core Ultra 200 processors seem to be taking the lead.
Reliable benchmark leaker @BenchLeaks took to X to reveal Geekbench 6 benchmark scores of an upcoming Strix Point chips. Per his claims, one of the upcoming SKUs will have a single-core performance of 2,544 points with multi-core scores going up to 14,158.
Exact benchmark details of the Lunar Lake CPUs are yet to be revealed. However, we already have some data about the Xe2-LPG graphics hardware being paired with the upcoming chips. Per leaked information, the Battlemage GPUs deliver a huge jump in performance over their Alchemist counterparts.
Some reports have claimed that Lunar Lake will deliver up to twice as much performance as Arrow Lake, Intel's upcoming desktop chips that are set to launch this Fall. This would mean serious competition for the Ryzen AI series.
