The IPS vs VA vs TN LCD comparison has been a constant topic of discussion among the gaming community. As a gaming enthusiast myself, I can understand the importance of selecting a good panel. There are a lot of things that need to be considered, like response time, color accuracy, and viewing angles.

However, selecting one display technology is nothing less of a head-scratcher, as different panels are suited for different scenarios. All three have their own pros and cons, which makes them suitable for certain types of games.

The basic workings of all these panels are almost similar. They operate by illuminating the screen from behind and employing specialized liquid crystals to regulate the display of light. These liquid crystals respond to electrical charges, allowing precise control over the light emitted from each pixel on the screen, thus forming the image.

TN monitors were the first mainstream displays to replace the old-fashioned, bulky CRT monitors. They use twisted nematic technology to work. This lets light from the monitor’s backlight pass through and then adjust it to show the correct color on the screen. When there's no voltage, the light passes through freely, but when voltage is applied, it changes the light to display the desired image.

The IPS LCD works opposite to the TN. When no electricity is applied, the light can't pass through. Moreover, the light passes through the front polarizing filter. The liquid crystals that were in the resting position rotate 90 degrees, from horizontal to vertical, to allow the light to transfer when the voltage is applied.

VA panel works almost similarly to the IPS panel. The light can’t go through until a voltage is applied and it passes from the front filter. The only difference is that the crystals are aligned vertically and turn horizontally when an electric current is applied.

While all three technologies are decent, there are enough differences that set them apart. Let’s have a closer look at various factors to determine the superior one in the IPS vs VA vs TN LCD comparison.

Contrast

In terms of contrast, VA panels lead the chart. Most VA panels come with contrast ratios above 2500:1, with some as high as 5000:1 - 6000:1. TN monitors are the worst, with a typical range of 600:1 - 1200:1. IPS panel ranges between 700:1 - 1500:1.

Although newer displays use local dimming to achieve much higher contrast ratios, no one is even close to producing blacks as deep as VA panels. However, it is also important to note that the advantages are limited to dark rooms only.


Viewing angle

In IPS panels, the image remains accurate even at a wide angle. VA monitors also maintain good color accuracy, but the image on TN displays doesn’t look that fine at moderate angles.

In both — TN and VA, you will notice a decrease in brightness when you change angles. To overcome this limitation, some brands have started using curved screens and adding wide-angle filters as well, but IPS panels still hold the ground for viewing angles.


Color gamut

Although there is not much difference in terms of color gamut in all three panels, with the new technologies enhancements, like LG's Nano IPS and Samsung's Quantum Dot, which majorly uses VA and IPS panels, TN has fallen behind. Choosing one, the IPS panels are slightly better in both SDR and HDR color space. Nevertheless, the difference isn't that noticeable.


Response time

For a long time, TN monitors were the fastest, but that's changing. Now, new IPS monitors with high refresh rates can be just as quick. VA panel monitors have the slowest response times compared to IPS and TN monitors. This makes them less ideal for gamers, especially those playing competitive or even casual games. Overall, TN panels are the most responsive for now.


Cost

Being available for the longest time — TN monitors are generally the most affordable, followed by IPS, which falls in between, and then we have VA panels that will cost the most.
