A recent Reuters report suggests that Nvidia is entering the CPU business with Arm chip offerings in 2025. These processors will reportedly power Windows PCs and bring better efficiency and performance-per-watt as compared to their x86 counterparts.

It is worth noting that the Arm-powered chip market has been dominated by Qualcomm and Intel so far. Apple's new M1 and M2 devices also utilize this technology for improved efficiency and battery life.

Alongside the RTX GPU maker, AMD is also planning to enter the Arm CPU market soon. The company previously worked with Microsoft for a custom version of Ryzen chips to power Surface devices. However, there have been no Arm-based launches from the company since, and Microsoft has since joined forces with Team Red to design AI chips.

Nvidia has launched Arm-based processors in the past

It's worth noting that Nvidia is not a complete newbie to the CPU or Arm-based chip market. The company previously designed the Tegra chip that powered the Microsoft Surface RT tablet in 2012. However, this device failed horribly, and another Nvidia-Microsoft partnership didn't happen. Team Green hasn't launched Arm-based consumer processors since.

The Arm CPU market is currently dominated by Qualcomm. Meanwhile, Apple silicon has also substantially disrupted the market with better efficiency and battery life. Intel's x86 standard has failed to keep up with what Arm delivers. Moreover, Microsoft has been rumored to enter the CPU market with Arm offerings for their Surface laptops and client servers. All of this can further complicate things for the trillion-dollar GPU maker company.

Microsoft's latest Surface laptops are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. The company is currently in an exclusive deal with a smartphone chip maker to use its chips for Surface computers. They have also partnered to co-engineer chips for the Surface Pro laptops -- namely the SQ1 and SQ2.

More Snapdragon chips are set to launch this Tuesday, which will power the next-gen flagship smartphones. The Reuters report confirming Nvidia and AMD's interest in the Arm CPU market also mentioned that Microsoft will attend the Qualcomm event, which likely means more future Surface devices will use Snapdragon chips for now.

Team Green is primarily known for its GPU business, which is based on chips designed in-house by engineers at the company. The company recently forayed into the AI market, focusing on developing hardware to run synthetically intelligent tech like ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and more. All of this tech runs on Nvidia GPUs. Continued success in these domains propelled the company to a $1 trillion market cap earlier this year.
