The Nvidia RTX 4070 Super and RTX 3070 Ti are two excellent mid-range cards for 1440p gaming. Both GPUs also support ray tracing and upscaling on most modern AAA titles. However, the RTX 3070 Ti is close to being discontinued and is now available for discounted prices at less than $600. On the other hand, the RTX 4070 Super is the ideal option from Nvidia currently for gamers with a similar budget.
This raises the question of whether you should buy the last-generation RTX 3070 Ti or the latest midrange GPU from Nvidia, but this has no straightforward answer. However, we compare these two and determine the best mid-range GPU choice in 2024.

The Nvidia RTX 4070 Super and RTX 3070 Ti are superb for Full HD and 1440p gaming
For starters, the RTX 3070 Ti and 4070 Super are manufactured on completely different architectures. The Nvidia RTX 4070 Super is built on Ada Lovelace architecture and focuses on providing improved gaming performance with better thermal efficiency. The DLSS 3 upscaling frame generation support is also currently exclusive to Nvidia 40-series GPUs.
All this hardware and software information means it comes with improved performance than the RTX 30 series GPUs. The power draw of most Nvidia GPUs is also much lower than its predecessor series. Now, let us take a look at the on-paper specification difference between the RTX 4070 Super and the RTX 3070 Ti.
Specs comparison
When talking about the on-paper specifications of these GPUs, the RTX 3070 Ti has a higher power demand of close to 290W, than the 220W TDP (thermal design power) of the RTX 4070 Super. The newer generation 4070 Super also has more RayTracing, CUDA, and Tensor cores than the 3070 Ti.
While the RTX 4070 Super has an MSRP of $599, the Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti after the recent price cuts is available for as low as $539 on various online PC stores. It is also available for a lower price in the used market, where you can get it for $300-$350.
Performance comparison
For judging any GPU, gaming performance is the best metric, especially while playing the latest games. In this respect, the latest Nvidia RTX 4070 Super promises slightly more FPS than the RTX 3070 Ti, and with the support of upgraded frame generation and DLSS3, the difference is far more superior.
Below is a detailed list of framerates achieved by both GPUS at the 1440p (2K) resolution with the highest settings applied. This data is sourced from the YouTube channel Testing Games.
As observed, the RTX 4070 Super with its 12GB VRAM can generate higher framerates than the last generation RTX 3070 Ti. In most games, the difference between these two GPUs is more than 15%.
Nvidia RTX 4070 Super vs RTX 3070 Ti: Final verdict
Both the Nvidia RTX 4070 Super and the RTX 3070 Ti offer stelar gaming performance, especially at 1440p, while playing most modern AAA games. However, if we have to pick a device between the two, the Nvidia RTX 4070 Super would be the clear winner. The main reasons are
- The 4070 Super bundles with a larger 12 GB video memory.
- DLSS3 and frame generation upscaling are a big upgrade over DLSS 2.
- The RTX 4070 Super is priced similarly to the RTX 3070 Ti if you're purchasing a new GPU.
However, if you have a limited budget and are fine running a used GPU, as mentioned, the RTX 3070 Ti can be picked up for around half the price.
