The Nintendo Switch 2 has been pictured online, with several designs showcasing the new display, Joy-Cons, and other accessories like a steering wheel and a pro-grade controller. Previous leaks suggested the handheld console would be introduced in early 2025. Rumors also hint it could be out before Donkey Kong Returns HD, which is set for a January 16, 2025 release. A launch before that could suggest a CES unveiling of the handheld.

For now, we don't have any new information on the console's name, which is still going by "Switch 2." The leaked design also suggests the successor to Nintendo's most successful formula would stay loyal to the handheld-focused form factor, unlike the massive shifts we have seen from the GameCube to the Wii and then to the Switch.

Multiple renders of the Nintendo Switch 2 and accessories have leaked online

These recent leaks come from X user @deckwizardyt, who is well-known in the handheld gaming market and has released insider information on several prior occasions.

One of the most interesting design features in the leaked images is a U-shaped kickstand. This could transform how Nintendo games are developed and create an era of controller-focused or cooperative gameplay.

The leaks have also shown quite a few changes to the Joy-Cons. First, they are expected to be magnetic, which could alleviate the Joy-Con drift issues that plagued all versions of the Switch. Moreover, the ZL/ZR buttons have seemingly grown in size, with a couple of back-release buttons mounted on the shoulders. The console is rumored to be lighter than the Steam Deck and compact, measuring just 118.5 mm x 273 mm.

However, a big upset is the LCD screen. The device won't receive the OLED treatment at launch, which is good for saving costs but not for the gaming experience. Nintendo could introduce a costlier OLED variant sometime down the line.

Multiple leaks have concentrated on the accessories that will accompany the Switch 2. A render showcases a steering wheel and a pro-grade controller that could likely be used to complement the gameplay experiences on the console.

If true, these new accessories have huge potential to redefine how Nintendo Switch games are developed. A steering wheel would unlock loads of new possible experiences for games like Mario Kart 9, which is supposed to be a launch title.

The leaked renders have also showcased multiple color options for the Switch 2's body and the Joy-Cons, with white and black being featured prominently. The design language seems to have received a significant overhaul, making it look inherently stylish.

Overall, the Switch 2 seems to be more a quality of life and rendering hardware upgrade than a completely new way to approach gaming. This is quite natural given the popularity of the Switch. Deck Wizard also hinted that the console will be capable of 'modern AAA' gaming, which sets the bar pretty high.
