One of the best smartphones to launch in the latter half of 2022 was Google Pixel 6a. In its price range last year, it was an easy recommendation, and even in 2023, it still exhibits the qualities of a reliable budget smartphone. Conversely, the Samsung Galaxy A54 is another excellent smartphone just released recently. Samsung has upgraded the Galaxy A54 as a follow-up to the well-received Galaxy A53, and it appears to have all the necessary features we require in a budget device under $500.

So, in this article, we compare the two smartphones to see if the Galaxy A54 is worth the extra price, it's currently retailing for, or if the Google Pixel 6a is still the phone to buy for most users in 2023. Next, we will compare smartphones' features, battery, display, and other significant parameters. So, let's begin.

Before comparing their other vital components to decide which smartphone is superior, we first see the main specifications of both mobile phones.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is superior to the Google Pixel 6a, particularly in battery life. The Galaxy A54's 5,000mAh battery is a powerhouse that can last longer for most medium- to heavy users.

The Google Pixel 6a, on the other hand, can capture significantly better photographs in nearly every lighting situation thanks to its Google Tensor G1 processor. Google's software magic also makes for much better HDR reproduction.

Performance

The Galaxy A54 has a better battery size than the 6a, but the Pixel 6a has a significant advantage in terms of processor strength. In 2021, Google started creating its chipsets, and when it used them in the Pixel 6a, it didn't sacrifice performance. In other words, the premium Google Pixel 6 Pro, which was previously priced at least twice as much, shares the same Tensor G1 processor as the Google Pixel 6a, which is impressive.

In contrast, Samsung employed its Exynos 1380 chip in the Galaxy A54. While on most benchmark apps, we found it to be better than the Exynos 1280 located in the A53 from last year; it won't compare to the Tensor G1 found in the Pixel 6a. So, regarding performance, the Pixel 6a is undoubtedly a winner.

Display

The Pixel 6a and Galaxy A54 5G on the front provide OLED displays, respectively, 6.1 inches and 6.4 inches in size. However, despite having identical panels with FHD+ resolutions, the Pixel 6a's screen is inferior to the Galaxy A54 in a few aspects. For example, the Pixel 6a's display can refresh at 60Hz, compared to the Galaxy A54's maximum 120Hz, which feels much smoother.

Compared to the Pixel 6a, the Galaxy A54's display is also brighter, with 1000nits peak brightness, making it more comfortable to use outside. Although the 6.1-inch is somewhat smaller than the Galaxy A54's 6.4-inch display, giving it a modest increase in screen size, you won't notice much difference when holding both devices side by side.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A54 features a 12MP ultrawide, a 5MP macro, and a new 50MP primary sensor. The Pixel 6a, in contrast, has a dual camera arrangement with a 12.2MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultrawide camera. As a result, the Galaxy A54 is a superior option in terms of flexibility because it can take precise, close-up pictures in good lighting conditions. But you will use a macro camera less than you think since it's useful in particular scenarios.

But, both smartphones can be relied upon for taking good photographs in normal daylight conditions. The Google Pixel 6a has an average 8MP front camera sensor, which is of little use for vlogging or in extremely dark situations. But with the Galaxy A54, you can undoubtedly shoot much better Full HD 60fps selfie videos, which are also stabilized.

Battery

The Google Pixel 6a has a modest 4410mAh battery, which only supports 18W fast charging. But with Google's software optimizations, you can expect one-day battery life with this phone. The 60Hz refresh rate also helps, as it consumes less battery than a fast refresh rate screen.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy A54 has a bigger 5,000mAh battery, which also supports 25W fast charging. Moreover, with the 120Hz refresh rate turned on, one can expect six to seven hours of screen time with the A54, which is reasonable. Hence, both smartphones can easily last a single day without any issues.

Verdict

Given that both are excellent mid-range smartphones with competitive price tags, the Samsung Galaxy A54 versus Google Pixel 6a is a problematic comparison, but Samsung delivers a complete product. At only $50 extra, you can obtain a smartphone with a Super AMOLED panel and a 120Hz Super AMOLED display, making it an easy recommendation.

But the best smartphone for anyone on a limited budget who wants Google handsets' speedier update schedule is still the Pixel 6a. With a package that will last you for years, a powerful flagship CPU, cutting-edge photographic tools, and fantastic software features offer incredible value.
