The South Korean giant has unveiled the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 at the Galaxy unpacked event, revealing some design upgrades and promising features. The new release has made people curious to know if it is worth upgrading over its predecessor, resulting in a Fold6 vs Fold5 debate among tech enthusiasts.
In this article, we will analyze what the new device brings to the table and whether you should pick it over its previous generation model or not.
NOTE: Parts of this article are subjective and reflect the writer's opinion.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Specifications
There are not many changes to be seen in terms of technical specifications. You get the same battery capacity, camera modules, and storage options.
Here is the complete specification table:
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 stands out with a 6.3-inch outer screen, slightly taller by 0.1 inches compared to its predecessor. The inner display is the same as the Fold5. However, the peak brightness level is increased to 2,600 nits from 1750 nits. There is a slight change in display resolution as well.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Performance
The new foldable from the tech giant runs on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which is way more powerful than its older version, thanks to its newer core design and advanced architecture.
Here are the benchmark test results of both chips:
This data is sourced from the NanoReview website.
The new Qualcomm mobile processor has outperformed its counterpart in every test. Except GeekBench 6 single-core test, the performance gap is more than 30% in each test. So, it can be concluded that the new Fold6 will deliver a better performance.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Camera
There is no single change in the camera module. You get the same 50 MP f/1.8 Wide, 10 MP f/2.4 Telephoto, and a third 12 MP f/2.2 Ultrawide snapper at the back, and the same 4 MP under-display camera unit and a 10 MP selfie shooter on the cover screen.
There might be some upgrades on the software side, but you can expect almost a similar performance from both devices.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Battery and others
There is no improvement in the battery as well. Both smartphones feature a 4,400mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging support. However, the 8 Gen 3 processor is more efficient than the Gen 2, so you might get some extra hours of work. However, for a phone that cost $1,899, I was assuming to see something better.
Nevertheless, the latest foldable phone boasts a bunch of AI features designed to boost productivity.
One thing Samsung did a great job on is the updates. The new Fold6 will get major Android updates for seven years. The phone's durability has been improved as well, featuring a stronger hinge, enhanced materials, and a larger cooling system.
That said, the RAM and storage capacity options are the same in both devices.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Should you upgrade?
Based on the above analysis, the answer is pretty clear. If you own a Z Fold5, I don’t see any major reason to upgrade your device to its new model. The latest foldable just brings some improved form factor and better performance. Besides that, there is little to no change in every aspect.
However, if you are going to invest in a brand new Fold, and are fine with dishing out an extra $100, then Z Fold6 is the option to choose. Majorly because of the updates that will be provided for seven years.
