The Steam Deck can now be upgraded to a higher-res 1920 x 1200 Full HD+ display thanks to a mod from DeckHD. The single biggest complaint of users with the popular handheld console from Valve was its low-res sub-1080p screen. Although users can connect their Steam Deck to an external display to get past this problem, that takes away its portability, which is the single biggest marketing feature of the product.
Newer handhelds like the ASUS ROG Ally also bundles a 1080p screen, quickly making the Steam Deck irrelevant for most users. However, DeckHD's new console puts the Valve console at the forefront of the handheld gaming market with a vastly improved 1200p display and improved colors that will take the experience to a whole different level.
DeckHD's new screen comes with a ton of features. It packs a wide 95% sRGB color gamut, which surpasses the native display's 67% sRGB coverage capabilities. The new mod comes with richer hues and deeper contrasts.
Can the Steam Deck handle video games at 1200p?
The DeckHD display for the handheld console seems like a solid upgrade over the original screen bundled with it. FX Technology Limited is manufacturing this add-on. The detailed specs and how they stack up compared to the original display are listed below.
Specs and pricing
The new display will pack a resolution of 1920 x 1200, which is a massive upgrade from the 1280 x 800 screen of the console. In comparison, the Nintendo Switch bundles a 1280 x 720 display.
It is worth noting that the handheld consoles from both Valve and Nintendo bundle a 7-inch display. At such small sizes, you don't necessarily need super high-resolution displays. It is the pixel density that matters. Although the DeckHD add-on will surely push the number high, we don't believe the upgrade is worth fighting over.
That said, the updated colors of the new display might make it worth the extra $99. With the Steam Deck's list of supported titles growing by the day, upgrading to a screen with better colors only makes sense to enhance the experience.
It is worth noting that the new screen won't increase the size, the brightness, or the refresh rate. The detailed specs are listed below:
The DeckHD display is priced at $99. You'll have to replace the original display of the console and install the new screen, which might be daunting.
