5 things I want to see in the Pixel Fold 2

What to expect from the upcoming Google

The Pixel Fold, which came out last year, was generally well-received. Its next variant, the Pixel Fold 2, is expected to arrive this year. While Google’s first foray into the world of foldables is decent, it still falls short compared to its competitors. The developer's first foldable had plenty of quirks. I am hoping the company is working to provide a more satisfactory experience with its upcoming device.

This article lists all the things I want to see in the Pixel Fold 2.

Pixel Fold 2 recommended updates

1) Design changes

There is no doubt that the OG Pixel Fold is an impressive device. It is relatively slim compared to most foldables. However, that’s the only thing in favor of the current model. Other than that, it is quite heavy, has thicker bezels, and a mediocre hinge mechanism. All these result in an uncomfortable user experience.

I believe Google will make some drastic design changes in the Pixel Fold 2 to give a more satisfactory experience to users.

That said, I am a fan of small and compact devices, so I loved the 5.8-inch panel (when closed) of the Pixel Fold. However, big displays have their own advantage. Though I am not saying Google should make the next version tall or narrow, a good screen real estate with a thinner bezel would be great.

2) DeX-like feature

Foldable devices tend to cater to power users who want to do extra tasks with their handheld devices. Samsung has done a great job in this aspect by adding DeX to its devices. With this feature, you can turn your tablet into a desktop-like computer. Though it is not a full-fledged desktop replacement, it allows you to multitask easily.

If Google adds something similar to the Pixel Fold 2, it will be a game-changer. With this feature, the upcoming device can be an alternative to smartphones, tablets, and basic laptops altogether.

3) Improved cameras

I would love to see a flagship-level camera in the next version of the Pixel Fold. It's not that the camera performance of the first model is bad, but it lags behind other flagship devices, including those from its own brand.

While the Pixel 8 series comes out later, the first Pixel Fold even lacks the camera capabilities of the Pixel 7 Pro. It lags behind in crucial aspects, such as zoom, ultra-wide angle, and low-light performance.

Considering the price tag of the Pixel Fold, it's only fair to expect significant advancements in the camera.

4) Fast charging and better battery life

Google has a history of not using the latest industry-leading charging standards, and the expensive Pixel Fold continues this trend. You get 30W wired charging with a device that costs $1799, which is very disappointing.

The Pixel Fold features a 4821mAh battery, which is okay. I am assuming it can give you 12-14 hours of use based on your usage and settings.

It would be thrilling to see improvements in these aspects in the Pixel Fold 2.

5) Optimized software

The Pixel Fold comes with Android 13, and you get five years of OS updates with it. Moreover, Google has provided some software customizations, like a disappearing app dock, split-screen multitasking, and drag-and-drop. However, the overall experience is not that smooth.

Unlike other foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold models, you're limited to two apps running at once. Floating windows don’t work well, and multiple apps need more optimization to work on a large screen.

Google should prioritize optimizing the operating system to better suit the Pixel Fold 2. Moreover, providing a similar seven-year OS and security update promise, as seen with the latest Pixel 8 series, would be highly beneficial for the next foldable device.

The original Pixel Fold is a decent device, but it has several shortcomings. By implementing some small changes, the Pixel Fold 2 could be vastly better.
