Vijay Kumar

2012 London Olympics Silver medallist Vijay Kumar will be the Indian flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games scheduled to start from July 23 in Glasgow.

The chef-de-mission of the Indian contingent Raj Singh said that Abhinav Bindra was approached to do the honors, but he declined as his event kicks off on Thursday. Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt is kept as a reserve. Singh is hopeful of India putting up a good performance at the games.

“They are all preparing well for the competitions ahead and I hope the contingent will return home with flying colours.” India will be participating in 14 of the 17 disciplines at the games.

Sports Secretary Ajit M Saran, IOA President N Ramachandran and IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta today visited the Indian contingent at the Games village and interacted with the athletes.

The opening ceremony is scheduled at 12:30 am Indian Standard Time on 24th July.
