Gymnast Dipa Karmakar made history today, becoming the first ever Indian woman to qualify in the gymnastics at the Olympics. The 22-year-old entered the finals at the test event in Rio de Janiero this Sunday, thereby making Indian Olympic history.
Tripura-born Karmarkar finished 42nd in the event overall, and qualified as a result of a rule that requires one athlete per nation to qualify.
Karmarkar, who is flat-footed, made her gymnastics debut in 2007, winning that year’s Junior Nationals in Jalpaiguri. In 2011, she won 5 medals at the Senior Nationals, and 3 years later clinched the bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first gymnast from India to win a medal at the Games.
