About Swiss Indoors Tennis

The Swiss Indoors is an annual professional men’s tournament that is based in the city of Basel in Switzerland. The tournament is played on indoor hard courts, although it was previously played on indoor carpeted courts initially. The Swiss Indoors was known for its trademark unique red coloured indoor courts, but it was however changed to blue in 2011, like most of the tournaments in the European fall indoor season.

It is a part of the ATP World Tour as a 500 series tournament. Previously, it was a part of the ATP International Series which was changed into the current ATP World Tour 250 series.

The tournament was founded in 1970 and has been won by three native Swiss players ever since - Michel Burgener, Jakob Hlasek and Roger Federer. The latter holds the record for the most Swiss Indoors titles as well, with a total of eight titles to his name.

The Swiss Indoors is supported by the Canton of Basel-Stadt and is sponsored by the likes of Emirates, Peugeot, and the SP Group. Previously, the tournament has also been sponsored by Ebel and Davidoff.

The 2019 Swiss Indoors is set to be held from 21st to 27th of the October month.

Venue

Since 1995, the tournament has been held at the St. Jakobshalle in Munchenstein, near Basel, Switzerland. The arena has a maximum capacity of 9,000 in its Grand Hall with secondary halls having a capacity of 1,500.

Defending Champions

The men’s singles title is held by world No. 2 Roger Federer while the doubles title is held by Ivan Dodig and Marcel Granollers of Croatia and Spain respectively.
