The 2024 Genesis Scottish Open will begin on July 10 and conclude by July 14 at the Renaissance Club's Links course in North Berwick, Scotland. The PGA Tour co-sanctioned the Scottish Open in 2022, with Genesis as the main sponsor. Earlier, it was sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management.
Founded in 1972 as the Sunbeam Electric Scottish Open, the Genesis Scottish Open has been one of the European Tour's Rolex series' top five events since 2017. Following that, its purse increased by more than twice, from $3.25 million to $7 million.
The event was cancelled in 1974 due to coverage issues; however, it was rebranded and introduced, 11 years later, to the European Tour in 1986, replacing the Glasgow Open.
Where is the Genesis Scottish Open?
The 2024 Genesis Scottish Open will be held at the Renaissance Club's Links course in North Berwick, Scotland. The Links Course is the earliest type of golf course, and it originated in Scotland; typically constructed on sandy coastland, which provides a firmer playing surface.
Born in Michigan, Tom Doak created the Renaissance Golf Club since he has a lot of expertise with the hard seashore turf; he constructed Pacific Dunes at Oregon's Bandon Dunes Resort, which opened in 2001 and is the 18th best US course as per Golf Digest.
Doak is renowned for creating challenges with short grass, dramatic slopes, and solid conditions. This style is similar to that of Augusta National's architect, Alister Mackenzie, on whom Doak authored a book.
The most notable Doak designed golf courses are:
Sebonack Golf Club in New York
Ballyneal in Colorado
The Old Macdonald course at Bandon Dunes
Rock Creek Cattle Company at Montana
Since 1986, the Scottish Open has been held at ten different venues; however, the Loch Lomond Golf Club hosted the event for the longest, from 1996 to 2010. However, there was a belief that the course would disadvantage European Tour golfers as it greatly differs from the Open Championship’s links course.
Thus, from 2011 onwards, the golf course changed to Castle Stuart Golf Links, close to Inverness, and moved to the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in 2014 after three years. There was a couple of further golf course changes before 2019 as the event moved to the Renaissance Club, where it would stay until 2026.
