There have been just four golf events held at the Olympic Games, with a span of more than a century between them. Golf first took place at the 1900 Paris Olympics, followed by the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, after which it took place at the 2016 Olympics, and then in 2020.
Interestingly, in its initial days, men and women both participated in 36-hole and 9-hole events, respectively, except for 1904, when women's events were replaced by team events. Further, the golfers who participated in the Olympics were amateurs, a rule that was changed in the 1980s. On the other hand, the 2016 Olympics and onwards were men's and women's individual events in a 72-hole stroke-play format, governed by the World Amateur Golf Council (WAGC). The latter organization was formerly known as the International Golf Federation (IGF), and the name change took place in 2003.
China’s Olympic Golf Medalists
China's retired golfer, Feng Shanshan, won one bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. China is ranked 12th on the all-time Olympic medal table for golf, at the bottom of the list. Shanshan also participated in the 2020 Summer Olympics but finished solo eighth.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Feng finished the last round at 10-under par after missing an 11-foot putt for birdie on the par-5 18th hole, which would have secured the silver medal for her. She moved up to third place on the leaderboard with a two-under-par 69.
Year | Event | Player | Medal |
2016 | Individual, Women’s | Feng Shanshan | Bronze |
Shanshan has a total of 23 professional wins, including 10 on the LPGA Tour. One of her most notable wins was at the 2012 Women's PGA Championship. She turned professional in 2007 and retired 15 years later, in 2022; however, she never intended to play for more than a decade.
Shanshan quit her career as a professional golfer to pursue other chances in and outside of the sport. She met her country's president, Xi Jinping, along with other Chinese Olympic athletes in 2016, the year she became the first Chinese golfer to win an Olympic medal.
Feng stated that she qualified for the 2008 LPGA Tour season at the age of 18. She added. “At that time, I said that I wanted to play 10 years on the LPGA (Tour), and that was it. After that, I wanted to do something else. I think I can do something else in my life. I didn’t want to just be a player. That was my plan. But the Olympics came to golf. Even though I won the bronze medal in 2016, I thought that maybe I should give myself another chance for a gold medal. So, I decided to extend my career.” (via LPGA).
