"Making the cut" is a crucial milestone in the professional golf world that allows competitors to advance to the last two rounds of a four-round competition. This regulation not only reduces the number of contestants but also raises the stakes and intensity of the competition as it goes on.
The Open Championship dates back to the 1800s and was first played in 1860, making it one of the oldest major golf competitions. This makes the Open one of the most challenging yet fun tournaments to play! However, a lot of new rules have been implemented since it started. One of them being the 'Cut-Rule'. The cut rule, which determines which players advance to the weekend, was introduced at The Open in 1926 and has been in effect ever since. Historically, the Open cut lines have undergone the fewest modifications of the four majors. However, over the competition's illustrious history, there have been a few modifications to the British Open cut rule. This year, the greens of Royal Troon will be full of talented professional and amateur golfers teeing off in the hopes of winning the next Claret Jug Trophy.
What is the cut line for the 2024 Open Championship?
The field consists of 156 players, and the top 70 golfers and ties after 36 holes will move on to the final two rounds of competition. Unfortunately, anyone who performs worse than that will not be making the cut for the Open 2024. Official purse earnings go to only those who make the cut; last year's purse was $16.5 million (the amount for this year has not yet been announced).
Unlike most PGA tournaments, the 10-shot rule doesn't exist. According to this rule, everyone who is within ten shots of the lead after two rounds, regardless of their position in the championship, advances to the next round. Only the top 70 finishers and ties are shown. Another major difference between the Open and the PGA tournaments is that even though their rules for making the cut are pretty much the same, there is only a single cut at The Open and no secondary cut after the third round! The players only get one chance.
Here's an example of the 36-hole cut line for the Open Championship has been as follows for the previous ten Opens:
