Under the moniker "Nabisco Championship," the Tour Championship made its debut in 1987 before rebranding as such in 1991. The FedEx Cup was established in 2007, and its field before it was confined to the top 30 money leaders from the previous PGA Tour season.
The field for the 18th FedEx Cup playoff event, the 2024 Tour Championship, has a field of golfers ranked among the top 30 on the FedEx Cup points list. It will be held at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, from August 28 to September 1.
What is the format of the Tour Championship?
The format of the Tour Championship is the Starting Strokes system, introduced in 2019, in which golfers receive a head start in the scoring based on their FedEx Cup standings position.
In the FedEx Cup Playoffs' final event, the Tour Championship, golfers are rewarded for both their play in the first two FedEx Cup Playoffs events and their regular season performance through FedEx Cup Starting Strokes, a strokes-based system that represents the FedEx Cup standings through the last-second FedEx Cup Playoffs event, the BMW Championship.
Along with recognition as the golfer with the lowest stroke total of 72 holes when added to his FedEx Cup starting strokes, the FedEx Cup Champion also receives an official victory credit at the Tour Championship, a five-year exemption to the PGA Tour, and a $25 million bonus. Besides the prize money, the top 10 finishers at the event will also get a ComCast Tour Top-10 bonus.
According to the FedEx Cup Starting Strokes, the FedEx Cup point leader going into the Tour Championship after the first two playoff events will start the competition at 10-under par. At 8-under, the second player will get underway, and at 7-under, the No. 3 player, and so it goes on till the 26–30 are at even par.
Golfers who are tied at any place entering the Tour Championship will receive an equal number of beginning strikes for the first round. In the event that two players are tied for second place, for instance, the starting positions for each would be 8 under, followed by 6 under for the next position.
Further, the starting stroke positions for the remaining players will not be redistributed, nor will any professional who qualifies for the Tour Championship but is unable to compete get starting strokes. Whatever professional is unable to compete, is disqualified, or withdraws will finish in last place in the Tour Championship.
