WM Phoenix Open History
The WM Phoenix Open was originally founded in 1932, then known as the Arizona Open. It was won by Ralph Guldahl over John Perelli at the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona. Two years later, the event's name changed to Phoenix Open, however, in 1936, the event was discontinued due to lack of support. In 1939, it was revived with the efforts of Bob Goldwater Jr., a businessman who asked the Thunderbirds to run the event.
The WM Phoenix Open is also the most attended event in golf, with an average attendance of almost half a million people over the course of it. It broke attendance records for the PGA Tour at the 2016 event with 618,365 overall spectators and 201,003 spectators in a single day.
In 2025, the event's organizers, the Thunderbirds, announced various changes for the 2025 event, including upgraded paths and general admission seating, as well as the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes being significantly closer to the venues for spectator convenience. Further, to avoid crowding, supporters can enter and exit the course through a second entrance near Frank Lloyd Wright and Greenway.
