The New York Giants were downright embarrassed at home last week against the Los Angeles Rams and could it possibly get any worse against a winless San Francisco 49ers team? Of course, the Giants found a way to lose to the 49ers 31-21.
The 49ers have only scored 30 combined points in the last three weeks. This week, the San Francisco offence was able to find the end zone a few times and go over 400 yards of total offence.
With San Francisco trailing 6-3 in the second quarter, C.J. Beathard threw an 83-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Goodwin. That was Goodwin's only reception in the game. On the next New York Giants drive, Eli Manning threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Evan Engram. Engram caught six passes for 31 yards receiving and a touchdown. Manning completed 28-of-37 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns.
Right before halftime, Beathard threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Celek. Celek caught four passes for 67 yards receiving and a touchdown. The New York Giants have given up a touchdown to a tight end in all nine games played this season.
When Aldrick Rosas missed a 34-yard field goal attempt for the Giants in the third-quarter trailing 17-13, it seemed as if the Giants gave up from that moment on.
In the fourth quarter, C.J. Beathard scored on an 11-yard rushing touchdown. He completed 19-of-25 passes for 288 yards two touchdowns and one interception. Beathard also rushed for 15 yards on five carries and a score.
Later in the fourth, Matt Breida scored on a 33-yard touchdown run for the 49ers. He finished with 55 rushing yards on nine carries and a touchdown. The Giants seemed disinterested to tackle all game long and they didn't seem to care one bit, especially on the Breida touchdown run. The 49ers leading rusher was Carlos Hyde with 98 yards on 17 carries.
The Giants scored on a touchdown late by Roger Lewis Jr. (14-yard reception from Eli Manning). Lewis finished with three receptions for 33 yards receiving and a touchdown.
This is a pathetic loss for the New York Giants and a good win by the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers wanted it more and it looked they actually cared about winning the game. With this loss, the Giants are closer to getting a top two draft pick and it is very possible Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo, and/or Jerry Reese gets canned as soon as tomorrow. It is clear that the Giants have given up on the 2017 campaign.
The Giants will host the Kansas City Chiefs (6-3) next Sunday and the San Francisco 49ers will go on a bye week.
