As much as Al Davis wouldn’t want to admit it, his Raiders were the feel good story of week 5 in the NFL. Davis loved the fact that his team was the renegade “bad guys,” but I don’t know one person other than lame ass Texans fans who weren’t rooting for the silver & black on Sunday. And yes, I’m still kicking my own ass for not changing my pick before the noon kickoff. Thank you for asking. I thought this team would come out and play inspired football in lieu of Davis’ passing, and they did just that.
The Raiders upset win has people taking notice of a team that is becoming a legit threat to win the AFC West, and is providing a glimpse of what Davis’ vision was for his squad. This team has Darren McFadden leading a powerful running game, explosive receivers (always what Davis wanted), a better than expected defense, & a sharp coach who has this team believing…
“Today is a great day for the Raiders all across the world,” coach Hue Jackson said. “It was a sad day yesterday. But I want everybody to know that I know without a shadow of a doubt that Coach is somewhere up there rejoicing.”
This team just finished a brutal stretch in which they played the Jets, Patriots and Texans. They are now 3-2 and heading into an easy stretch of their season. Oakland has three consecutive home games, all very winnable — it hosts Cleveland and Kansas City before the bye week, then hosts Tebow Time & the rest of the atrocious Broncos.
And leave it to Sebastian Janikowski and Darrius Heyward-Bey (two highly questionable 1st round picks of Davis) to play key roles in the win. Just trust me, Baby. Of course they did.
The Raiders will be led by Mark Davis for the time being until someone is hired to run the day to day operations, but this was a day for Al. His team has started to take on the identity that he envisioned over the past few years. Wherever Al watched this game on Sunday, all he cared about was whether or not his team won. They did, and they also are making people take notice that this isn’t the layup Raiders team from years past. When Raider Nation says “just win, Baby” these days, it’s more than just an expression. It’s a legitimate possibility.
