It’s virtually impossible these days to avoid what the stupid have to say, but what is the point of Jeff Pearlman’s new book “Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton?” Is telling the public that Walter Payton took pain pills as a player a big story? The man played 1 on 11 for much of his career (he missed 1 game in 13 years by the way) and beat his body to a pulp for the sport he loved. It’s possible that the continued pain pill use had some effect in him developing the rare liver disease and bile duct cancer that took his life in ’99, but nobody can say that, although, I’m sure Pearlman (who’s 4 other books are also sports related snooze fests) would have loved to.
It irritates me because here is a junk journalist (my new name for bums like Pearlman) exposing a man’s flaws who has been dead for over a decade. Why now, Jeff? You know, other than the fact you want to profit off of a beloved figure?
And if it shocks you that Payton had been seeing a woman for 5 years before his ’93 induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, than you are more naive than my three week old niece. I’ll refer you to the one part of Eddie Murphy Raw…It’s a men thing. If you YouTube it, you’ll understand.
Oh, and to the WNBA loving & Barry Bonds bashing Sports Illustrated Elizabeth Newman: 41% of all U.S. marriages contain infidelity (thanks to @boywonder777 for sending over that nugget). Did this news surprise you, Liz? You are a sports retard if you think this silliness is “excellent reporting.” You must also think TMZ is on the same level as the New York Times.
Real Quick Liz: The WNBA is a farce. The fact you have supported a league that does nothing but lose money every year shows ignorance and stupidity. More people watch the hot dog eating contest than watch a form of basketball that is lower than suburban rec leagues. But yeah, keep pimping that horse shit league.
Anyway, where was I before that SI clown sidetracked me…..Oh yeah.
This is pointless information by a guy looking to expose Payton’s flaws for a quick cash grab. Cool move, bro. If this guy had any balls, he would have written this book when Payton was still living, or shortly after his death. And if this is the most “shocking” information that this book contains, than it will be a coaster for a shit ton of drinks at cocktail parties. What’s next Jeff, a book on Tom Brady’s secret life? What a douche juice this guy is.
Learning that Walter Payton wasn’t perfect isn’t a surprise. I’m past the point of being jaded by stories like this. All I know is that the times I got to meet Walter, he was as genuine and as real as anyone I have ever met. When my father and I used to go up to old Halas Hall before a Bears practice, Payton always took time to sign whatever I had with me. He was never too big for anyone. He cared about people. The day that he died, sports radio in Chicago was littered with calls from fans who had met him. And guess what? There wasn’t one person who called in that day that ever had a run in or issue with him.
He had flaws that everyone who has ever walked this planet has had. Big deal. I don’t condone cheating on your spouse, but I’m also not shortsighted enough to think this isn’t a regular occurrence for professional athletes. So sorry Pearlman, your book does nothing for me. Your attempt to earn extra cash off of a dead man is ignorant & deplorable. I hope the money you make from this is a constant reminder that you have done nothing but try (key word there) to destroy a man’s character for your own benefit.
Walter Payton didn’t parade around like he was better than people. He was a legitimate man in a world filled with scumbags who had his demons just like we all do. Having said that, I do know that he would never slander anyone’s name to make a dollar. So what does that make you, Jeff? I mean, besides being a low class hack who is trying to make a name for himself?
