Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas, born on December 31, 1995, in Newport News, Virginia, began gymnastics at the age of six. She won the Level 4 all-around title at the 2004 Virginia State Championships at the age of eight. At fourteen, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, to train with coach Liang Chow while her family stayed in Virginia.

Douglas made her international debut in 2008, placing 10th at the US Classic and 16th at the Visa Championships. Despite a wrist injury in 2009, she competed in several junior events, including the 2010 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup and the Pan American Championships.

Transitioning to senior-level competition in 2011, Douglas won gold with the US team at the City of Jesolo Trophy and the World Championships. She earned individual medals at the CoverGirl Classic and US National Championships.

In 2012, she won all-around gold at the Olympic Trials and competed in the London Olympics as part of the "Fierce Five." The team won gold and Douglas made history with her all-around gold. Douglas returned for the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning another team gold with the "Final Five."
